The fluidity and dynamism inherent in classical natural elements are qualities lost in the contemporary urban paradigm of gridded streets and prosaic urban living. In the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, this belief served as a fundamental design parameter for local firm DA Studios when they were called upon in 2018 to design a shared house for the families of three brothers. cul-de-sac, bordered by upcoming residential towers, the architects saw an opportunity to subvert established norms in the architectural language of the area. Drawing on the slow, striated movements of glacial ice, they envisioned a respite from the turmoil of urban India.

How To Decide Between Hiring An Architect Or A Designer

A diamond is shaped under enormous pressure. Under such circumstances, a deep clarity comes into the human mind,” DA Studios reports. Equating this statement to the challenge they faced, the architects created the erratic, jagged RH21 apartment design in response to the chaotic changes of its nearby context. Once relatively barren, the surrounding areas have seen significant development in previous years. The rate of new modifications to the urban structure of the zone has been constantly accelerating throughout the duration of the design and construction of RH21. On a narrow site, the residential architecture is characterized by projecting planes and projecting volumes, with a strong emphasis on diagonal and horizontal movement, in contrast to the verticality of the surrounding development.

Another major influence on the design, according to the designers, was the work of Russian abstract painter Wassila Kandinsky, specifically a visual metaphor for the concept of genius and its relationship to spiritual experience specified in his book, On Spirituality in Art, published in 1912. Kandinsky depicted this concept using a moving of an acute-angled triangle divided into different layers by horizontal lines. He further shed light on the downsides of true exceptionalism, particularly how the esoteric nature of such an individual’s work is reflected in how it is often markedly different from its artistic contemporaries, for better or for worse. He further uses the slow movement of the triangle – both forward and upward – as an analogy for the gradual development of artistic innovation.

The appropriateness of this metaphor may be unresolved in certain respects, but the concept of artistic esotericism may be related to the uncertain deconstructivist tendencies seen in the rhythmic forms of the residence’s facade design. Strikingly different from the mess of construction sites in its surroundings, the home is an evocative but indecisive mass that is meant to contrast and contradict – pushing the development of the surrounding urban context along a new trajectory.

Using its own unique vocabulary, fragmentation, slanted lines, unexpected deviations and dynamic balance, the design resolves the conflicts of space and movement. The mass of the house starts from a rectilinear corner at the back of the property and becomes increasingly curved and angular as it moves towards the front of the house. DA Studios states: “The architecture of the house responded not only to the requirements stemming from the client’s cultural needs, but also to the contextual needs, forcing and shifting every plane, room, volume and line to create its own reactionary architecture. ”

Between the narrow row of buildings, a textured gate slides away to reveal an entrance canopy with wood paneling on the inner sides. The canopy is held up by sloping elements that intersect against a background of jagged surfaces. A parametrically designed screen of customized hexagonal thermowood elements, mounted on a metal frame, covers the glass niches in the house while providing textural contrast to the smooth cement surface.
